I was born too late - just when the last trolleys were taken down. My best friend lived in Alameda at the top of the hill. I lived on 16th & Stanton.
The Beaumont Streetcar, constructed in 1911, was a spur off of the line that ran from 42nd & Sandy to downtown. It's farthest northern end of the line was on NE 41st there above the ridge, about halfway between Alameda and Klickitat. You can get a good look at it by clicking on the Beaumont Plat Map here on the site. The line was in place until 1936, when it was replaced by bus following the widening and relocation of poles along Wisteria. I don't think there were any cows around during these years. The subdivision was platted in 1910 and would have been transformed from its previous rural feel into more of a subdivision feel at that time.

Do you know where the end of the line was for the line up 42nd towards Freemont? I'm guessing that wide spot at Alameda. What a weird end of the line, I'm surprised they even built a line up that hill, then to just ceremoniously terminate. Must have been a lot of cows around there in those eary days.

Looks like a perfect case of past as prologue...our former streetcar system was quite an amazing network. It looks like NE Fremont is the only potential route that travels through Alameda proper, though nearby NE 15th and NE 42nd are also under study. The map of the potential routes is a big file--about 8 MB, but worth the download. Thanks for making the link, Wendy.

I'd love to see a reference to the current effort underway by the Portland Office of Transportation to look at a new Streetcar System Plan for the city. There are a couple of routes in the Alameda area under consideration.
