Nice to read about Wiles. My wife and I were walking around Irvington, saw his name in the concrete, and wondered about him. The city is installing wheelchair ramps at some of the corners, and we noticed how incredibly thick the old sidewalk concrete is. That was quality work by Wiles.

Giebisch and Joplin built our sidewalk in 1911. We are celebrating that event this weekend. (Lowell and Corbett on Aug 21) The research on Wiles is fabulous.

Elwood Wiles was an Uncle to me. I've been working on the family history for a good many years and am thrilled to see his life come to life. In this photo, I see many of his ancestors after him.

As a Portland concrete contractor of 20+ years I've torn out and replaced miles of sidewalk. Elwood Wiles and his crew produced some of the most high quality work of his era.
They used a technique I call a layered pour, where they poured a base layer of large rocks and cement, then a top layer of sand and cement for easy tooling.
I never knew the history behind my favorite old world cretin......thanks!

I too found Elwood Wiles 10 stamped in a concrete curb 3/28/10, next to an old horse hitching ring, on Sevier street, 1/2 block east of NW 23rd. Thought it was his old house site. Prob. just poured the curb. Anyway, interesting...

I am so glad to be reading about Mr. Wiles. I am visiting Portland from NYC (born and bred, however) - and while walking noticed the imprint on the concrete of "Elwood Wiles 1909" as well as "Miller & Bauer 08". Sent me on a Google search to discover what those imprints meant. Thank you so much! Do you know anything about Miller & Bauer?

Grazie.
